Self-harm is the term given when someone intentionally causes harm to themselves as a way of relieving pain, dealing with difficult experiences, memories or feelings. This could include someone cutting themselves or putting themselves in risky situations. It is a coping strategy that people use when trying to manage their emotional hurt or stress. Self-harm affects people of all backgrounds, genders and ages.
