Free webinar: mental health & physical environments

Student Minds are hosting a free webinar which explores the link between the physical environment of universities and mental health.
The environment in which students live, work and study is an integral part of the college and university experience. Colleges and universities are often distributed across multiple buildings and campuses, spanning large, complex and diverse estates.
These environments condition the everyday experience of further and higher education: the feasibility of focused work and learning, opportunities for informal social connection, access to restorative breaks, and the ease with which individuals can participate safely and with dignity.
The event will consist of a panel discussion and Q&A, featuring the authors of the upcoming publication ‘Wellbeing and physical the environment of universities’. The speakers include:
- Dr Emma Jones – Senior Lecturer in Law and Director of Sheffield Digital Justice at the University of Sheffield
- Dr Michael Priestley – Lecturer in Education Studies at Durham University
- Dr James Simpson – Lecturer in Landscape Architecture at the University of Sheffield
- Dr Sue Wilbraham – Associate Professor in Environment, Health and Wellbeing at the University of Cumbria
The panel will address key strategic questions:
- Which specific aspects of an institutions physical environment most impact staff and student wellbeing?
- How can institutions design and manage their estates more mindfully for the future?
All and college, university and students’ association staff are invited to attend, whether they work directly in estates, student support, academic delivery, or strategic planning.
This session offers valuable insights into the role the physical environment plays in taking a whole-institution approach to mental health.
