Coping with self-harm and suicidal thoughts
This post mentions and links to videos which discuss self-harm and suicide.
On World Mental Health Day 2024, Samaritans launched a series of videos featuring people talking about what helped them in their own journeys and in supporting others with self-harm and suicidal thoughts.
Everyone is unique, and what works for one person may not necessarily work for others when it comes to coping with self-harm and suicidal thoughts.
We know this subject can be a challenging one and unfortunately is a reality faced by some students. A lot of colleges, universities and students’ associations are already doing great work to support their students, and continuing this work is committed to within their Student Mental Health Agreements. This includes upskilling students, creating safety plans and staff training. These videos could be helpful for staff wanting to learn more from people with lived experience of self harm and suicide.
All of the videos can be found on the Samaritans YouTube Playlist.
Additional links to Samaritans pages and other sources of support are included in the video descriptions.
Samaritans also have some related resources which may be useful for staff and students. Resources include:
- Practical tips if you find yourself doomscrolling
- Controlling the suicide and self-harm content you see online
- Sharing your experiences of self-harm and suicidal feelings safely online which also has a section on safe moderated spaces to talk online.
If you would like to talk to someone about how you are feeling there are a range of organisations who are ready to support you.
