LGBT+ History Month – February 2024
The 2024 theme for LGBT+ History Month was ‘Medicine – #UnderTheScope’, celebrates LGBT+ peoples’ contribution to the field of Medicine and Healthcare both historically and today.
LGBT+ History Month is celebrated every February across the UK and was founded in 2004 by Schools OUT UK to ‘claim our past, celebrate our present and create our future’.
As we come to the end of LGBT+ History Month, we wanted to highlight some of the excellent activities that have taken place in Scotland’s Colleges, Universities and Students’ Associations to celebrate, recognise and support LGBT+ students.
Ayrshire College Students’ Association
City of Glasgow College & Students’ Association
- LGBTQIA+ resources hub which contains links to information, support and resources for LGBTQIA+ Students.
- Re-launched their Gender Affirming Grant.
- Purple Friday – a day to celebrate the spirit of the LGBT+ community and our allies.
- Art Competition.
Dundee & Angus Students’ Association
- Film screening to raise awareness of mental health and wellbeing in the LGBT+ community.
- Pride Fit: Out and Active, run in collaboration with LGBT Youth Scotland.
Edinburgh Students’ Associations
- Edinburgh College SA, Heriot-Watt Union, QMUSU, Edinburgh University SA, and Edinburgh Napier SA collaborated to put on a student party to raise funds for LGBT Health & Wellbeing.
Glasgow Clyde College Students’ Association
- Student led weekly LGBTQIAP+ group.
NESCOL & Students’ Association
South Lanarkshire College & Students’ Association
- Pride Stride – a solidarity walk.
- Purple Friday – a day to celebrate the spirit of the LGBT+ community and our allies.
University of the Highlands & Islands
West Lothian College & Students’ Association
- West Lothian College have become the first college in Scotland to achieve LGBT Charter Gold accreditation.
